With water toxicity and growing gentrification, the Gowanus Canal head is anything but “Venice”.



“At the pumping station a steampowered
propeller forced water out of the canal and expelled it into the channel, and cleaner water was admitted into the canal. Things went... well enough for a few decades, though the Gowanus Canal would never remind anyone of Venice.”

The push and pull between the Northern and Southern units combined with their vertical stepping motion generate a porous space connecting the playground and the residential units together. As light, water, and human engagement shift, this space becomes highly flexible, creating different program, atmosphere, and spatial experience.
