“Once the (third) avenue had been a place for people; Robert Moses had made it a place for cars. And as the avenue’s roadway became more crowded, its sidewalks began to empty…

With its heart gone, the neighborhood had no will to resist the invasion. There was nothing to hold its people… The whole area died with the road.” (523-524)
- Robert A. Caro, The Power Broker

Throughout the history of D15, we have witnessed an entanglement between education and transportation, which has generated systems of physical and implied boundaries, isolating neighborhoods, disconnected communities like Red Hook and Sunset Park, and contributing to an inhospitable streetscape for school kids.

	Our project, Healing through Adaptation, aims to heal the division in District 15 neighborhoods by adapting the existing Brooklyn Expressway and proposing an alternative transit system.

	Our research also indicates how the neighborhood has long be divided and separated by the physical presence of the elevated expressway, and how existing transit systems can hardly accomodate the need for school chridren to navigate the district - a student from Sunset Park Prep needs to transfer as many as three times to arrive at another “education resource cluster” in Cobble Hill.

On the street level, the actions that we eliminates the overhead presence of the BQE, giving the streets back to the residents of D15, the proposed plan also taps into the open streets in Brooklyn show here, strengthening the east-west fabric of the city.

<img width="1875" height="1350" width_o="1875" height_o="1350" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a9eeaa79d183d1be4eb4b89ff4dd49ce9b09335dcc77bac7aa36cc2fb9fc57f0/8-am.gif" data-mid="109411257" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/a9eeaa79d183d1be4eb4b89ff4dd49ce9b09335dcc77bac7aa36cc2fb9fc57f0/8-am.gif" />

	Looking at the proposed track system and the new relationship formed between the leftover BQE chunks and the streets, with no cars in the city, the streets are given to these human-friendly tracks that are interwoven together. From left to right in this plan, it shows slow and fast walking lanes, bioswale, tracks for transit pods, and open space for spontaneous activities.

In the long run, adjacent buildings can be connected through this for expansion of programs.

	The expressway chunk shown above serves as an extension to the exitsting playground of Sunset Park Prep. This adapted expressway chunk not only provides extra activity spaces, but also connects the streets east west so that the students can get to the other side safer and quicker.
Other alternative afterschool programs including community farm and outdoor classrooms can also happen on these expressway extensions.

	At night, the transit system takes on delivery duty by linking waterway delivery and industrial production to the individuals in D15. The pods also help breaking down the volume of the freight in this process. The BQE chunks that serve as transit hubs are intended for multi-purpose uses, for example, the top deck features charging ports, distribution stations, and
parking stations that can serve as temporary spontaneous event spaces(food truck etc.).&nbsp;

	Intended to be a shared “third place” for organizations, this youth center explores the potential of interstitial spaces especially in terms of how they encourage spontaneous collaboration.

The concept model articulates one questions that this project is trying to answer:
what would be a generative way of organizing the in-between space?
Both on a macro and micro scale, the Dixwell intersection forms its own liminal microcosm.

<img width="1600" height="900" width_o="1600" height_o="900" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/1e7cf897f68d02aaf3f2ef6a9275057cc5be438d65b1bc7513616c14671f0e57/F20_1021a_EA_ZhouJ_GIF-concept.gif" data-mid="109412082" border="0" data-scale="55" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/1e7cf897f68d02aaf3f2ef6a9275057cc5be438d65b1bc7513616c14671f0e57/F20_1021a_EA_ZhouJ_GIF-concept.gif" />

How can the “liminal” be stretched, compressed, elongated, and celebrated?

<img width="5882" height="3905" width_o="5882" height_o="3905" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/72bf02085f97a921f4b821febf29e1e9777bb43f59ba51918b53c44e7e65c9dd/F20_1021a_EA_ZhouJ_Parti-Drawing---Copy.jpg" data-mid="109629107" border="0" data-scale="65" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/72bf02085f97a921f4b821febf29e1e9777bb43f59ba51918b53c44e7e65c9dd/F20_1021a_EA_ZhouJ_Parti-Drawing---Copy.jpg" />

	The building is set back from Orchard Street in the west, giving it an open front and a welcoming gesture, echoing with the residential nature of the neighborhood. Cross-circulation is also preserved for this unique lot that’s at the intersection of three major streets. The massing then shifts to make way for the “double functions”, including the two performance spaces and art classrooms, offering more possibilities for the process of meandering from one to the other.

	<img width="2000" height="1500" width_o="2000" height_o="1500" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/dfba78f2092e595b5c8235f331b0d7efbd50e568f373454bde5551c9d889a511/F20_1021a_EA_ZhouJ_GIF-structure.gif" data-mid="109412084" border="0" data-scale="67" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/dfba78f2092e595b5c8235f331b0d7efbd50e568f373454bde5551c9d889a511/F20_1021a_EA_ZhouJ_GIF-structure.gif" />

	“At the pumping station a steampowered

propeller forced water out of the canal and expelled it into the channel, and cleaner water was
admitted into the canal. Things went... well enough for a few decades, though the Gowanus Canal would never remind anyone of Venice.”

The push and pull between the Northern and Southern units combined with their vertical stepping motion generate a porous space connecting the playground and the residential units together. As light, water, and human engagement shift, this space becomes highly flexible, creating different program, atmosphere, and spatial experience.

	Our proposal embraces awkwardness, indeterminacy, and ambiguity—necessary conditions for the interaction of our bodies with architectural form. While prioritizing these qualities, safety is ensured by establishing physical thresholds that are productive for intimacy and a gradation of cleanliness.

Designed for two people, the unit is structured into three zones: cleansing, social, and intimate. The unit is an intersection between a rectilinear shape and an amorphous form. A dedicated buffer zone is placed upon entrance for initial sanitation and limited human contact. Through contraction, expansion, curtains and glass, the flexible form gently separates the social and the intimate, each preceded by cleansing pockets running through the unit. This fluidity extends to the hybridity of the architectural element, transforming into occupiable furniture. Extending towards the building’s central courtyard, it becomes balconies that are arranged to provide community in socially distanced ways.

It is domesticity made safe, playful, and undefined.

“The 2020 Jim Vlock First Year Building Project is sited on the interior of a residential block in New Haven’s Newhallville neighborhood. First-year M.Arch I students were able to design the two-unit, single-story structure before pandemic-related shutdowns. This year’s house marks the fourth collaboration with Columbus House, a New Haven-based provider of services to populations dealing with homelessness. Construction onsite took place in the late summer and autumn of 2020, with tenants moving in in early 2021. The design of the house explores circular economies of waste reduction, relying on sustainable timber construction.”Two-unit Housing Proposal

someone with a neighborhood, that is also a factor in housing because it

Bramante | Dissonance from Reconciliation

I’m interested in exploring the hierarchical presence, both rhetorical and structural, given to the different orders in the two projects. Because of their difference in rhetorical and structural priorities of the space, when encountering dissonant at their corners, the Cortile at Santa Maria used a subtractive language while Palazzo Ducale applied an addictive one, and they both left architectural hints of these methods.

The organization of the cortile at Santa Maria is defined by the voids and rhetorically subjects’ experiences, and as a result, the interior-facing side of the columns on the first floor had to give ways to the colonnade-facing side to make sure that the viewers’ experience is consistent, and the dissonance on the interior-facing side of the columns’ pedestals have to be sacrificed in order to make that structural system work.

On the other hand, the cortile at Palazzo Ducale prioritized the wall system, meaning that the disjuncture at the corner is a compromise in order to make sure that the mathematical relationships between the columns remain constant, and the gaps generated from the problem is filled up with the underlying structure: the wall. The hint of a circular column at the corner which does not work with the overall ratio is a compromise made to mediate between the grammar of the columns and the wall. The cortile at Palazzo Ducale is essentially a space enclosed by four walls yet at Santa Maria it’s dominated by a grid of columns.

Palladio | Mathematics introducing Structural Dominance

There are two major differences when comparing II Redentore to San Giorgio Maggiore. Firstly, the dominance of the crossing in each of the buildings are established in ways that disrupt the organization of the rest of the structures in diverse manners. Moreover, the mathematical tie of II Redentore with its surroundings are significantly more major than the other.

To be specific, In Redentore, the crossing is inserted into the classical transept church typology, and that insertion manner generated a sense of compression in both plan and elevation. The width difference of the crossing and the rest of the structure hints a sense of conflict, and the poche which places a buffer hallway between the articulated inside and the rigid outside supports the same argument. On the other hand, the crossing at San Giorgio Maggiore indicates a clear sense of expansion. The poche that confines the crossing contrasts with the one at Redentore, showing the crossing breaks free from the aisle and the transept surrounding it. The elevation carries the same characteristics as the crossing part ascends to lower than the transept.

Moreover, the two buildings also indicate two kinds of progression: the Redentore has a liner, progressive transition whereas at San Giorgio Maggiore, the organization is centrifugal, with the centre of the crossing being the optical also and organizational focus of the entire building, tying all other parts together. &nbsp;

Nolli and Piranesi | Figure-Ground vs. Figure-Figure

In ways that Nolli’s Map of Rome and Piranesi’s Campo Marzio differ, we can sense two drastically attitudes and approaches towards urban environments: figure-ground conditions versus archeological studies. Nolli brought socio-political factors into an archeologically scientific mapping of Rome, making it as “true” as possible. He understood the city as it is, and in his Map of Rome, architecture stands as parts of the city, the orientation and fabrics of the architecture is bonded with the streets and courtyards. In some ways, Nolli treated the architecture and the ground of the city as two-dimensional elements that are juxtaposed on to each other; the ground condition is like a blank canvas that needs to be defined by the architecture to become “city”.

Alternatively, Piranesi treats the city as a collection of obstructive elements pressed into the ground and pressed against each other. He also believed that immense elements, such as walls and columns, are what constitutes “magnificenza”, and that’s the reason why he populated the imagined restoration of Rome with numerous walls and columns that are individual, intrusive parts that don’t belong to any contained structure.&nbsp;

My drawing contrasts the different ways that Nolli and Piranesi treated the “leftover” space between the ground and the structures. Nolli respected these spaces because as part of the city fabrics, what is left over is as important as the what is built on the ground – they are two complimentary components that complete the city fabric. On the contrary, the streets disappear and are replaced with imaginary elements in Piranesi’s map, the city became a forest of immense structures that generates an arbitrary sense of scale, making the city a polulation of figure-figure conditions.

Bernini and Ranaldi | Baroque Heterogeneity
Even though the twin churches of Sta. Maria in Montesanto by Bernini and Sta. Maria dei Miracoli by Rainaldi are intended to create visual similarities, these two churches are vitally different structurally. When viewed in plan, the church of Sta. Maria del Miracoli is more compressed compared Sta. Maria in Montesanto, mainly because it appears to be a more “perfect” circle whereas the dome of Montesanto casts a dominating oval shape over the structure. It is understood that the difference in plan is for the two churches to create an optical delusion that makes the passengers see these two as two of the same origin from the entrance of Piazza del Popolo, yet the compression and expansion of the interior leads to a series of interesting organization of the individual elements.
There is one constant and one variable between the two churches. The constant is the actual dimension of the alter in bother churches, and to maintain this constant, associating parts of the interior has be to compromise and adjusted. The variable is referring to the way that the bays and the columns are calculated. From the aisle part extending into the alter, two bays in Montesanto translate into one bay in Miracoli. This conversion led to the emission of one side bay and a series of openings.

Furthermore, the grouping and overlapping of the interior reflects the contrasting sense of compression and expansion within the churches. Both church can be vaguely grouped into three parts – the entrance, the nave and the alter. In Montesanto, these three parts remain sequentially independent of each other, but in Miracoli, they intersept and negotiate with each other, consequently generating some unique poche.

Rural Women’s Collective for Land Readjustment

Gender-based Violence on Rural Chinese Women Investigated through Land Ownership

“The gender-based structural violence against rural Chinese women shows an affordance to constructively reshape the dynamics between them and their hostile context. This essay proposes a trans-regional women’s collective that enhances their women’s physical and political situation in the current context, specifically by replacing the binary condition that makes their identity ambiguous with a third entity that they can always re-identify with.”

	Land, especially in the rural Chinese context, grants more than just a piece of ground and the products that it provides. It affordsinformation, relationship, hierarchy, temperament, and everything else that determines the status of the owner in a rural collective. From the division of each family lot to their proximity to water source, land and its associated qualities shape the geopolitics of Chinese villages. The land is never static, but the binary nature of land borders resists these alterations. Boundaries, people, and legal regulations—the dialogue among these three actors therefore determines the landscape as well as the associated power interplay in a village community.

As the negotiation of these factors demands compromises, rural Chinese women’s land rights and interests are taken as casualties. Their identities are regarded as manipulable and thus rejected as needed, as the temperament of the legal structure determines that rural women’s disadvantages are invisible to the community that they function within. This essay argues that the ambiguity of rural women’s positions within their communities calls for a reversal of the existing power dynamics; the current disadvantages of rural females can be utilized as an affordance to generate a flexible, agency-giving condition that counters the reluctance from their dependents. It also suggests that to navigate within the current context, an effective, sustainable readjustment of land assignment needs to happen from within—this essay proposes a trans-regional women’s collective that can take on both political representation for women and physical re-adaptation of the land in rural China.

↑ Common ways that rural women are deprived of their properties,&nbsp; mostly in the process of maritual or family status changes

	The series of diagrams suggest an internal conflict among three actors: the binary condition of the female’s identity, the sentimental ties that she has with both sides of the binary, along with the rejecting disposition of both parties. It is worth mentioning that the land itself does not show resistance against these actions;

land is not a factor in
jeopardizing women’s land rights. The rural land is malleable and fluid, it permits alterations and works with different hands; it is the ideological borders assigned to it that makes it seem static.

	To also consider the potential impact of the new land allocation structure on a trans-regional level, it is productive to envision this network when similar behaviors start repeating itself. When the simple negotiation between natal village and new location is repeated, rural women’s displaced,&nbsp;“middle-ground” condition becomes the more stable default.

In other words, because women are the most mobile group in rural settings and they are in constant exchanges from one location to another, the state of being land-less and identity-less is the true norm. The image above shows the possibility of a large number of land-less women who remain invisible to their surroundings and disconnected from each other, therefore the new land distribution structure should function in the form of women’s collective.

	The last diagram shows how the restructured dynamics could free rural women from the current perplexing dilemma of being land-less and identity-less. Ideally, a trans-regional women’s community will claim an adequate portion of arable land in each village, and rural females can transfer their portions of land in a fashion similar to transferring credits among the collectives in different villages when her status changes. Functioning within a cross-village women’s collective allows rural females to be taken out of the constraint of binay identities, therefore making it possible to have a smooth transfer of land when her residence changes.

Having a physical establishment of land for a women’s collective can also have a reversal impact on the ideological structure of current land distribution, consequently modifying the disposition of the context. By bringing forward the number of women who are rightfully entitled to their land and pooling their production together, the visibility of their labour and production nullifies their systemic invisibility.

A women’s collective also connects women who are priorly disengaged with their community, thus giving more agency for advocacy in the current political structure of villager’s autonomy.The gender-based structural violence against rural Chinese women shows an affordance to constructively reshape the dynamics between them and their hostile context. This essay proposes a trans-regional women’s collective that enhances their women’s physical and political situation in the current context, specifically by replacing the binary condition that makes their identity ambiguous with a third entity that they can always re-identify with. Aside from raising a collective voice for rural women in political settings, a&nbsp; cross-regional women’s community also encourages the fluidity of land itself, countering the ideological borders assigned by a biased infrastructure that has a disposition of isolating women from their land and related rights.
